TempeScouts.org is all about Scouts and Scouting throughout Tempe, Arizona and neighboring areas. This site features resources of local Scouting interest, such as maps of urban hike routes, maps to nearby trailheads in national parks and other natural areas, photos of trails and trailheads. There are resources for specific merit badges and rank advancement requirements, such as worksheets, information, examples of projects. Troop 174 is a long-established Scout Troop chartered with the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). The troop is community-based and includes trained adult leadership and youth (Scouts) from multiple different congregations, denominations and religious backgrounds (or none).
Troop 174 meets every Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at the Del Rio/Shalimar church building next to McClintock High School in Tempe, Arizona (1881 East Del Rio Drive, Tempe AZ).
The Troop goes on approximately one camping trip and one 10-mile hike every month, with a week-long camp during the summer.
Membership is open to all youth ages 11 through 18. Any adult in the community is welcome to participate as a mentor or youth leader in a number of a capacities, including Assistant Scoutmaster, Merit Badge Counselor, Camp Assistant, Hike Leader, Committee Member, etc. Adults who volunteer as youth leaders in Troop 174 include computer programmers, truckers, attorneys, homemakers, contractors, business owners, college students, and people who simply want to have a positive impact on youth.
The official charter organization for Troop 174 is the Evergreen church located on the western edge of Mesa at 700 South Evergreen Road, Mesa, AZ 85281. Most of the adult leaders and Scouts in Troop 174 do not belong to this congregation, but attend various other churches.
